One of Only Six Female Winners in Award’s 64-Year History

Mimi Fritz, President and CEO of the Grand Rapids Downtown Market, was selected by the National Association of Produce Market Managers (NAPMM) as Market Manager of the Year at their annual conference, held this month in Miami.

NAPMM’s Market Manager of the Year award winner is selected annually by the NAPMM Executive Board, and recognizes a market manager for their work and accomplishments at their market. All entries are judged on overall accomplishments, with measurable outcomes being heavily weighed.

“Presenting Mimi with this award is an honor for NAPMM because she has clearly demonstrated her work to promote local food production, increase community engagement, and infuse creativity,” said Kristina Stanley, NAPMM president. “She is one of only six women to receive the award in its 64-year history, and she has been diligent in her work to move the industry forward.”

Fritz has led the Downtown Market since 2012, before the physical building even existed. She has overseen all aspects of the organization, including building a staff, leasing and guiding the build-out of tenant spaces, creating policies and procedures, creating a human resources program, building a corporate culture, opening the Downtown Market on Labor Day 2013 to a crowd of 30,000 people and most importantly, creating a financially sustainable organization within two years of inception.

Under her leadership, the Downtown Market has launched more than 85 businesses, counseled more than 450 and created 500 jobs. To date, ten Market Hall tenants and Incubator Kitchen businesses have expanded outside the walls of the Downtown Market into second locations or their own brick and mortar space. Nearly one million people visited the Downtown Market in 2017.
