Grand Rapids Downtown Market welcomes new board members

The Grand Rapids Downtown Market, the region’s preeminent destination for innovative food experiences, today announced the addition of several new members to the Board of Directors.

The new board members will begin their terms in January, working to advance the Market’s mission and vision, including connecting with the community and helping to cultivate and grow small businesses. Additions to the board include: HR Collaborative Partner Lisa Cooper, Green Collar Farms Founder Brian Harris, Pioneer Construction President and CEO Tim Schowalter, Spectrum Health Delivery System Chief Medical Officer Doug Apple and JW Marriott General Manager Brian Behler.

“There’s no shortage of passionate and skillful community leaders here in Grand Rapids and we’re fortunate to welcome five outstanding individuals to our Board of Directors this year,” said Mimi Fritz, president and CEO of the Downtown Market. “These community trailblazers will help us advance our mission to offer dynamic food-centered experiences, education, and entrepreneurship opportunities dedicated to a healthier community and economy."

            Downtown Market Board of Directors additions:

Lisa Cooper, PHR: A graduate of Grand Valley State University with a degree in Management, Cooper is an HR Business Partner at HR Collaborative, specializing in building human resource functions from the ground up for small- and medium-sized organizations. Her expertise includes strategic planning, talent acquisition, performance management and development, employee retention and engagement, leadership coaching and more.

Brian Harris: Former president and CEO of H & H Metal Source, Harris is now founder and farmer at Green Collar Farms. Harris graduated from Tufts University with a bachelor’s in Engineering Psychology, and began his career in Grand Rapids at Westinghouse Furniture Systems in facility planning, shop supervision, materials management and product marketing. In 1993 he joined Steelcase North America, holding various executive marketing positions before leaving to purchase the majority share of H & H Metal Source. After 20 years, Brian sold the company to start a new journey in controlled environment agriculture, and remains active in the community.

Timothy Schowalter: Schowalter is the president and CEO of Pioneer Construction, a Grand Rapids-based contractor with annual revenues in excess of $150 million and approximately 300 full-time employees. He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in civil engineering. Tim and his wife Barbie received the Grand Valley State University Leadership award in 2010.

Douglas Apple, MD: Apple serves as chief medical officer for the Spectrum Health Delivery System. His work involves developing integrated care within a multispecialty medical group, focusing on population health and transitioning models of care to a value-based experience for patients and providers. Apple contributes to several committees, including patient safety and quality, operations, finance and compensation. He is an effective physician leader with many years of experience, dedication to patient care and improved outcomes, and has successfully led quality and safety initiatives as the medical group continues to expand its regional presence.

Brian Behler: Behler is the general manager at the JW Marriott, where he is directly responsible for overall guest and associate experiences. He provides leadership and resources to ensure a luxury class experience that brings guests back again and again to downtown Grand Rapids. His extensive knowledge of the Grand Rapids hospitality industry helps him serve as a link between the hotel community and the overall business community. He is passionate about Grand Rapids and providing great visitor experiences.
